Elgin and The Mables describe The Sun Never Sets as "a semi-concept album in the tradition of The Kinks’ Arthur (Or the Decline and Fall of the British Empire), The Sun Never Sets tells the story of the last decade of Britain over the course of 12 original tracks."

"At turns biting, satirical, funny and tender, the record captures a country lurching from nostalgia to chaos, austerity to arrogance – told mostly through the voices of the villains: politicians, landlords, curators, royals and Jim Davidson" says Callum from Elgin and The Marbles.

Elgin and the Marbles is fronted by Callum Baird, a Glasgow-based songwriter who was editor of The National for seven years and is now editor-in-chief of a publishing group that includes The Herald and Glasgow Times.

“I was on the frontline reporting for every twist and turn of all these massive political stories - and that experience runs all through the songs,” says Callum. “It’s basically a record inspired by working through that whole s**tshow – Brexit, Boris, broken Britain, all of that."

“And this year – when we passed over sovereignty of the Chagos Islands – the sun finally set on the empire for the first time for more than 200 years, so it feels like the perfect time to put something like this out.”

 Album highlights include:

  • Lead single The British Museum – out September 19th – a five-verse history of The British Empire and colonialism through the eyes of the curator.

  • If Elvis Faked His Death – a rip-roaring anthem about love and conspiracy theories, in the vein of early Gaslight Anthem punk.

  • The Treasury’s In Love – a Johnny Cash-style driving country ballad about how austerity slowly became economic orthodoxy at HM Treasury.

“A lot of the songs are written from the perspective of the bad guys, which we quickly realised was a really interesting way of telling these stories,
” says Callum.
My House is sung by a dastardly buy-to-let landlord who’s making so much money he’s now just buying up that flat you and your partner really wanted for the fun of it."

“Stop The Boats follows Sir Francis Drake, Lord Nelson and Rishi Sunak as they each try to repel their respective fleets and keep England safe – and how absurd talk of an ‘invasion’ is."

“And you know it’s not all political, there are some love songs on there. Something Good is a mostly acoustic track that’s special to me, and Nothing Like You is a stripped-back ballad with just the vocal and piano.”
