The Fat Lady Sings: Two Essential Reissues You Need to Own on Vinyl

We're reissuing two landmark albums by The Fat Lady Sings — Twist and Johnson — on vinyl and CD through Past Night From Glasgow. Here's why both belong in your collection.

There are records that stay with you. Not because they were the biggest sellers or the most talked-about albums of their era, but because the songwriting is honest in a way that most music isn't. The Fat Lady Sings made records like that. When I started thinking about what to bring back through Past Night From Glasgow — our reissue sub-label — The Fat Lady Sings were always on that list. I'm delighted to say we now have not one but two of their albums available: Twist and Johnson, both on vinyl LP and CD.

Who Were The Fat Lady Sings?

The Fat Lady Sings emerged from Dublin in 1986, relocating to London where they built a committed live following and released a string of independent singles before landing on East West Records. Fronted by singer-songwriter Nick Kelly, the band — which also featured Tim Bradshaw, Dermot Lynch, and Robert Hamilton — were part of a broader wave of early-'90s Irish alternative rock that never quite got the recognition it deserved outside of Ireland.

In 1990 and 1991, they scored multiple Top 20 singles in Ireland. Their sound was built on jangling guitars, emotionally precise lyrics, and a melodic sensibility that sat somewhere between indie rock and literate pop. Nick Kelly, in particular, is one of those songwriters who consistently writes lines you wish you'd thought of yourself.

They were the kind of band that people who discovered them tended to feel proprietary about. If you were there at the time, you'll know exactly what I mean. If you weren't, these reissues are your chance to understand why.

Released in May 1991 on East West Records, Twist was The Fat Lady Sings' first major-label album. It followed the single "Man Scared" and went on to produce three further singles: "Arclight," "Twist," and others that cemented the band's reputation for emotionally resonant, hook-driven indie rock.

What makes Twist stand out, more than 30 years on, is how deeply felt it sounds. This is not a record trying to be cool or clever. It's a record made by people who cared about the songs. Nick Kelly's songwriting blends pop-rock directness with a dream-tinged quality — there's warmth in it, and weight too. The band's ability to merge alternative rock textures with genuinely accessible melody was rare then and remains rare now.

If you're coming to The Fat Lady Sings for the first time, Twist is the place to start. It's the debut album that established everything they stood for, and it sounds extraordinary on vinyl.

Johnson – Open-Hearted and Unafraid

Johnson captures The Fat Lady Sings at their most open-hearted and ambitious. Across these songs, the band threads jangling guitars with sharp emotional detail, building a world where memory, regret, and hope collide. It's an album that moves with purpose — melodic, literate, and unafraid to sit with the difficult moments. Every track feels like a postcard from a life half-lived and half-understood, delivered with the band's unmistakable blend of tenderness and bite.

Our Past Night From Glasgow reissue of Johnson arrives on 27th November 2026, and it has been put together with real care. The album comes in a gatefold sleeve across three vinyl variants:

  • Umber Vinyl — exclusive to Last Night From Glasgow
  • White Vinyl — available widely
  • Rosewood Vinyl — exclusive to independent record shops

The reissue also features brand new cover art and extensive liner notes written by Nick Kelly himself. This is exactly the kind of reissue I want to put my name to — one where the artist is involved, the packaging reflects the quality of the music, and collectors have a genuine reason to seek out a specific pressing.

Why These Records Matter

I've been doing this long enough to know that certain catalogues deserve a second life. The Fat Lady Sings are one of those acts that fell through the gaps — not obscure enough to be cult, not commercial enough to stay in print, but producing music that held up better than most of what was around them at the time.

At Last Night From Glasgow, we sign artists whose personality and integrity we believe in. Past Night From Glasgow exists to do the same for records that have already been made — to bring back music that matters, pressed properly, with the artist's involvement. Both Twist and Johnson fit that brief exactly.

If you're a subscriber, these releases may form part of your membership. If you're not, this is as good a reason as any to take a look at what a subscription actually gets you.
